“The ocean, beach and nature make part of my life, I cannot live in a city.”
Sara started bodyboarding when she was 15 years old, after a friend who was a champion of bodyboard offered to show her how to catch the waves.
“Since I could walk I’ve been in the ocean. My father was a fisherman and we lived in Sagres, surrounded by the Atlantic, so my connection has always been with the sea. When I started bodyboard I had no fear, no hesitation, it felt from the beginning like it was ‘my natural’ and it was important for me to do.”
After finishing school, Sara studied Tourism and Animation in the Natural Park, then went straight to work in tourism, first in the west Algarve and then in Alentejo. Always close to the west coast, the nature and the surf.
After opening the surf school opened in 2003, it was the obvious next step to combine surfing with hospitality and start the surf camp. And where better than in the very beautiful and most southwesterly corner of Europe, in their home town.
“I travelled a lot and spent time also in other parts of Portugal… as a child I would spend time with my family in Lisbon… and I love to travel in the winter, explore different places. I’ve been to around 20 different countries, to South America, Brazil, Bali, Thailand, Asia and Africa. There are two places in the world I always return back. But Sagres always stays as my base. It’s a part of me. When I return from a trip, as I come near to home I have a good feeling in my body, it’s like a strong energy, especially when I’ve stayed away longer.”
And so the Sagres Natura Surf Company was made; with the surf school run by Luis, the shop by Celso, and Sara managing the camp - because it’s one of the things she loves most:
“Making people feel welcome and organising the accommodation, the food and drinks. It’s perfect for me, to share all the things I love with our guests… and to share this place, the outdoors, the weather, the beaches and surf spots and the nature of the area. To make the holiday special for our guests, that everybody enjoys Sagres and feels well in the camp, is part of our family. I love this very much, to see the people happy.”
Sara enjoys other activities; to walk, cycle, do gymnastics and step classes, go to the gym, but nothing beats being able to jump in the sea.
“Spending time in the ocean is very important for me… and seeing the way it makes others feels also, the smiles from surf holiday on the faces of our guests, it's one of the best things. Everything for someone who has connection with the sea, it’s here. The nature creates a feeling of magic and it’s beautiful to see people enjoy all these and appreciate.”
Sara’s other favourite things include:
To wake up early and watch the sun rise, I don’t need alarm, just go outside and watch the beginning of the day. Feel peaceful and enjoy the view over all Sagres while most of the people still sleep.
I choose the women's collection for the surf shop, I love to do.
I love to be backpacker and travel around the world, always stay in guesthouses. Travel is one thing you can buy that will make you richer.
I love the simple things in life, and the most important is to be happy.
A good healthy breakfast. That’s another thing that’s very important, to give a big breakfast for our guests to have all the energy they need for surf – and the guests always appreciate too, they tell us!”
